Summer reading has always been an important way to keep kids’ minds engaged and avoid the “summer slide,” or the tendency for students-especially those from low-income families-to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the school year.īut with the pandemic causing additional disruptions to learning, summer reading has taken on even greater significance in the last few years.
